Is Facial Surgery Obsolete? (Spoiler Alert: No)

The number of minimally invasive and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments performed in the U.S. has drastically increased over the last decade. Injectables, lasers, and other advancements have helped make it easier than ever to look your best without a lot of downtime.

A woman considers facial surgery after learning about new and improved procedure techniques.

So, are surgical procedures like facelift or blepharoplasty in Baton Rouge a thing of the past?

In short, no. Even though there are many alternatives to facial surgery, there are still several benefits to surgical solutions. Some of the unique advantages of facial surgery include:

• Long-term results.

Minimally invasive treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers can last for many months. However, touch-ups are needed to maintain your results.

In comparison, surgical procedures, such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or a brow lift, offer results that can last 10 years or more. In addition, the results from surgery are usually much more dramatic than less-invasive approaches. This is especially important for people who hope to take several years off their appearance.

• Significant improvements.

Although nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments can help you look younger and more refreshed, facial surgery provides the most dramatic changes. For example, someone who has very loose skin and deep wrinkles will benefit more from surgery than from a nonsurgical approach. That’s because facial surgery can tighten and lift loose skin much more significantly than lasers or injectables. In fact, facial surgery is often the only way to remove hanging skin from around the jawline, neck, or upper eyelids. And thanks to advancements in surgical techniques, your results can look more natural than ever.

You can also combine different facial surgeries to provide even more transformative results. At my practice, it’s common for patients to combine procedures like a facelift and neck lift, or eyelid surgery and a brow lift, to get the most complete results. This also reduces your overall downtime because you consolidate what would be 2 or more separate recovery periods into one. Just make sure you schedule your surgery at a convenient time when you can recover, such as during the holidays.

• Over time, cosmetic surgery pays for itself.

Cosmetic surgery carries a much higher price tag upfront than minimally invasive treatments. However, over time, your surgical procedure may actually be more cost effective. That’s because facial surgery provides long-term, significant improvements that can last for many years. By contrast, a nonsurgical procedure will require multiple follow-up treatments to maintain your results.

Surgery Plus Minimally Invasive Treatments: A Perfect Match

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to aesthetic enhancement. And while surgery may be the best option for some, others may benefit just as much from a nonsurgical approach. And sometimes, combining surgery and nonsurgical treatments yields the best results.

Many of my facial surgery patients continue to maintain their appearance with injectables and other medical spa treatments. Likewise, many nonsurgical patients eventually decide to have surgery. It’s important to understand that your treatment plan may not be one or the other—it may be both.

Which Is Right for You?

Deciding the best approach to help you achieve your cosmetic goals is no easy task. That’s why it’s extremely important to find a trustworthy, board-certified plastic surgeon who can develop a customized treatment plan for your needs, budget, and goals.
