What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a noninvasive procedure performed by our physician assistants to treat spider veins and uncomplicated reticular veins. Treatments involve simple injections into the affected veins with a prescription medicine called Asclera (polidocanol) that damages the inside of the vessel. Over time, treated vessels are absorbed and disappear. You may notice improvement in as little as 3 weeks, but most veins need 2 to 3 months achieve final results. Occasionally, multiple treatments will be required for complete correction.
For patients with cosmetic concerns, we also treat unsightly spider veins and capillaries with intense pulsed light and laser ablation.

These treatments break down blood vessels near the skin’s surface and cause the body to naturally absorb them, leaving behind clear, evenly pigmented skin.

What causes spider veins?
Spider veins are rarely a serious health problem, but they can cause uncomfortable feelings in the legs such as itching or burning. Spider veins can sometimes be a sign of blood backup deeper inside the leg and often cannot be seen under the skin. In the same respect, they can be uncomfortable and unsightly. They are exceptionally common on women’s legs. A number of factors predispose a person to spider veins, including:
- Age
- Heredity
- Occupations that involve a lot of standing such as healthcare worker, hair stylist, teacher, and industrial worker
- Excessive body weight
- Hormonal changes
- Birth control pills
- Hormone replacement in postmenopausal women
- History of blood clots
- Sun overexposure, which can cause spider veins on the face, cheeks, or nose, especially in fair-skinned people

Sclerotherapy is a quick, comfortable procedure that helps reduce or completely address varicose veins. During treatment, you can expect a pinch and perhaps some pressure or slight stinging, but nothing too uncomfortable. You can also expect fast relief, with full results in just a few treatments.
What can I expect during recovery after sclerotherapy?
Patients can return to work and daily activities immediately after treatment. You will need to wear compression hose for 2 weeks, but otherwise recovery is very easy.
